Why Regulated People Find Each Other — Even Across the Miles

Why Regulated People Find Each Other — Even Across the Miles

Holidays are often described as joyful, but for many NeuroDivergent families they are anything but restful. Anxiety rises, routines break down, sensory overload increases, and meltdowns become more likely.

When anxiety takes over, thinking shuts down—for autistic individuals and NeuroTypicals alike.

Real conversation requires regulation.

In my clinical work, I now see only clients who are willing to do that work: managing their anxiety, taking responsibility for growth, and thinking clearly. Those conversations are deeply rewarding because no one is carrying anyone else.

Some people grow quickly—so quickly that their relationships struggle to keep pace. Growth has a velocity. Love doesn’t always reorganize itself fast enough.

That’s not failure. It’s physics.

What I see again and again is this: regulated people find each other. Across cities. Across countries. Across neurotypes.

They connect through resonance, not proximity.

A recent Christmas Eve gathering organized by NeuroTypical partners in NeuroDivergent families illustrated this beautifully. The goal wasn’t venting or crisis management. It was simply to have a normal conversation before the holidays intensified.

That kind of anticipation—organizing before anxiety peaks—is wisdom born of experience.

Having a spine doesn’t mean being rigid. It means standing steady enough to think, speak, and choose wisely.

And when regulation comes first, real connection becomes possible—even across the miles.

If this reflection resonates with you, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to hold it alone.

I host After Parties, which are small, live, online conversations for people in NeuroDivergent relationships who want more than coping strategies. These gatherings are for thoughtful, regulated dialogue—where anxiety is lowered and real conversation becomes possible.

Before you go, consider this question:
What helps you stay regulated when those around you are overwhelmed?

You may already know more than you think.
