Narcissism Is a Choice — So Is Radiant Empathy

Narcissism is not a personality type I treat. It’s not my specialty. But after five decades walking alongside NeuroDivergent families, I’ve come to understand narcissism in a different way—not as a diagnosis, but as a defensive posture against unbearable psychic pain.

In NeuroDivergent relationships, partners on both sides of the divide can slip into narcissistic defenses. The NT who is starving to be heard. The ND partner who feels criticized for simply being themselves. Over time, both become exhausted, brittle, hyper-focused on their own pain—until empathy collapses and survival mode takes over.

THE CHOICE

Narcissism is a defense, yes — but eventually, it becomes a choice. In NeuroDivergent relationships, emotional exhaustion can push both partners into self-focus, blame, withdrawal, and the collapse of empathy.

But Radiant Empathy is also a choice: the path of clarity, courage, and inner truth. A lighthouse built from truth that helps you step out of denial, manipulation, or emotional depletion — whether your own or someone else’s.

THE FORTRESS OF NARCISSISM

Narcissism is a fortress built around a wound so deep the person fears annihilation. Blame and shame become weapons. Manipulation becomes protection. Humor becomes cruelty. A narcissistic person may even laugh at your suffering because to feel your pain would mean feeling their own.

THE CHOICE POINT

We all reach a moment—usually in burnout—when we can see the fork in the road. Stay armored, or step into awareness. Awareness is the birthplace of Radiant Empathy. And Radiant Empathy is not weak. It is discerning. It will not allow you to walk into the mouth of the wolf.

RADIANT EMPATHY: A LIGHTHOUSE BUILT FROM TRUTH

Radiant Empathy doesn’t say “love your enemy,” and throw yourself to the wolves. It says: See clearly. Protect your spirit. Step aside from those who cannot join you in the light. Offer compassion without offering your life.

A HOLIDAY INVITATION

For the end of the year, I invite a gentler form of forgiveness—not sentimental forgiveness, not boundary-less forgiveness—but a forgiveness rooted in truth.

Forgive the narcissistic people because they are terrified. Forgive yourself for the moments you slipped into self-protection. And walk forward with Radiant Empathy as your True North.
